sunflower bee

Hello there. Today’s card uses the fabulous ‘sunflower bee’ stamp set from Julie Hickey Designs, and for one I’ve used every stamp in the set on this card! I was inspired by the sketch at TGIF challenges and took my colours from Less is More‘s colour wheel. I’m also going to share it at Happy Little Stampers in their watercolour challenge.

I started by stamping the sunflower onto a piece of white card that I’d trimmed to fit a 5×7 card blank. I made a mask for the flower from a stickt note, covered it up and stamped the honeycomb pattern on either side of the flower (I used ‘watering can’ Archival ink for all this). I also added the little bee dictionary definition.

I watercoloured the sunflower in two shades to get some depth to it, picking up yellow and orange/yellow from Less is More’s colour wheel. I used my waterbrush, putting ‘mustard seed’ Distress Oxide on the outer part of the petals and ”wild honey’ nearer the centre. Once dry, I attached it to the 5×7 card blank.

I stamped & die cut the bee from the set, adding his yellow stripes with a marker pen. I attached the bee and the banner sentiment on mini foam pads, just to give them a bit of lift.

I was so happy how this turned out! Regular readers will know I’m a big fan of bees, but I think the sunflower is the real star here.

  1. Really liking how you masked the sunflower to add the honeycomb pattern. The sunflower is so pretty. Great job with the watercolouring. Thanks for joining us at Happy Little Stampers ~ Watercolour Challenge.
