Life seems to be going by at speed and here we are again with our next challenge at As You See It and Heather C has given us this lovely soft spring palette. I decided they would work perfectly with the new geisha stamps from ClarityCrafts – had you spotted the lanterns in the bottom corner of the set? The cherry blossom in Japan is a famous spring image and I thought the SHAC japonica would make a good substitute.

So here’s what I did. I first stamped the larger japonica branch onto half a 5×5 card blank using black Archival ink. I added the two lanterns to hang down from the branch and then masked off the main parts of the image. I put the outer part of the largest moon mask over the branch, brushed ‘squeezed lemonade’ Distress Oxide through it and then removed all the masks.

I got out my colouring pencils to shade the image, using a pink Pergaliner for the blossom, an orange one with a peach Polychromo for the lanterns and a grey Polychromo for the branches.

I added the ‘happiness’ stamp from the Japanese sentiments set (lanterns are often hung for celebrations), then mounted the topper on a piece of yellow Waimea Falls companion paper and attached it to a black 6×6 card blank.

So have our colours inspired you to join us? Remember you should only use the tones in the challenge picture, plus a neutral. We’re looking forward to seeing your designs in our gallery!

Deborah how perfect – these colours work so well for oriental cheery blossom; beautiful composition with the sun behind your lanterns too. Fabulous!

I like the way you’ve softened the colours by using pencils. The masked effect is wonderful, especially the sun behind the branches. Another beauty, Deb.
