block of candles

Hello crafty friends. Today’s the day when ClarityCrafts release their first new stamps of 2024 -this card (one of my design team samples) uses one of the ‘retro candles’ set designed by Tina Cox. These are perfect for all ages and styles, as well as the challenges at The Paper Players and AAA Birthday

It won’t surprise you to know that I started with a rectangular embedder to create a frame on the front of a 5×7 card blank (it’s my current favourite technique!) I then stamped the large block of candles into the centre of the frame using black Archival ink.

Next I watercoloured the image with a range of Distress Oxides, going for an ombre effect – ‘squeezed lemonade’ & ‘carved pumpkin’ for the flames, ‘wilted violet’ & ‘villainous potion’ on the outer candles, and ‘candied apple’, ‘festive berries’, ‘picked raspberry’, ‘kitsch flamingo’ & ‘spun sugar’ on the central block.

I cut masks for the three flames, then brushed ‘squeezed lemonade’ over them to give the impression of the light from the candles.

And it really didn’t need anything else adding to it. It’s a great image for birthdays of all ages.
