rainbow flowers

Welcome to my crafty blog. Today’s card is something a bit different for me – always good to ring the changes. I wouldn’t normally use so many colours on one card (three is usually my limit), but this week’s challenge theme over at Just Us Girls is ‘rainbow colours’ so what else was there to do? I’m also going to share this one at Less Is More for their ‘one layer card- flowers’ challenge. I made a rookie error the other day when I shared my blue tits card with them, as I’d put the design on a separate piece of card before mounting it on a card blank, so it wasn’t a one layer card. Lesson learned!

I started by getting out the seven colours of the rainbow I was going to craft with. I’ve never forgotten the phrase we were taught at school to remember the colours of the rainbow – ‘Richard Of York Gave Battle In Vain’, ie red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo & violet. For the uninitiated, the phrase allegedly refers to the Battle of Wakefield in 1460 (part of the Wars of the Roses) when King Henry VI of the House of Lancaster defeated the forces led by Richard, Duke of York, his rival for the throne of England. (who knew a crafting blog could be so educational?)

Back to the card! I stamped the large and small flowers from Stampin’ Up’s new ‘Forever & Always’ set onto a 5×7 card blank (one layer, right!) using the six colours apart from green.

I then used the green to add in the leaves around the flowers. There are two sizes of leaf in the set so I used both.

I finished the card by adding small triangles of dots around the flowers and leaves (these are from a Julie Hickey Designs set), and then stamped the sentiment from a retired SU set ‘perennial birthday’. I thought it was just perfect for this card.

Thanks for dropping in. It’s been raining here this afternoon but with thick grey cloud, so no sign of any rainbows!

  2. What a lovely rainbow flower garden, Deborah. In the US it’s just ROY G BIV but I loved hearing your version of remembering the colors. Thanks for sharing your card with us at Just Us Girls.
