For the birds at As You See It Challenge

Hello again! I’m back with a second card, this time for our new theme at As You See It challenge, and Jane has given us ‘birds’. Lots of scope for this one and another excuse to play Clarity Craftslandscape masks, although this time I’ve paired the ‘meadow’ ones with the ‘feathered friends miniatures‘ stamp set.

I’ve also pulled a couple of additional challenges into this card, with the palette from Color Throwdown and ‘colouring’ & ’embossing’ from Just Add Ink‘s options.

So, on to the details. I started by stamping the kingfisher onto a small square of Clarity’s stencil card, covered him over with the pre-cut mask that comes with the stamps and added the tree from the ‘highlands treescape’ set that I used yesterday. It looked a little bare, so I stamped it in a second time with the trunk off to the side of the card, which filled out the leaves behind the bird. I also added the branch from the ‘feathered friends miniatures’ set, so he didn’t look like he was free floating! I then laid the ‘savannah’ mask set onto the card so I could start creating my landscape. I lifted the bottom piece and brushed ‘uncharted mariner’ Distress Oxide across it, to give the impression of a river (where else would a kingfisher be?)

I worked on upwards with the mask, replacing each piece after adding the colour. I used a blend of ‘twisted citron’ and ‘mowed lawn’ for the ground (having masked the bird again), then turned to the small clouds mask from the build a scene landscape masks. The sky looks a bit dark, but it’s the same colour as the river -just I didn’t add any more ink to my brush. Next was to get out my Pergaliner pencils in pink, teal & lime to shade in my lovely kingfisher. Now don’t shout at me that they don’t have pink feathers – read on to the end for a spot of education!

I added the sentiment from the ‘floral delights – happy birthday‘ set, together with the little birds from the ‘woodland treescape’ set – after all, our theme at AYSI is ‘birds’ (plural) so I couldn’t leave Mr Kingfisher on his own, could I? Having embossed a frame onto the front of a 6×6 card blank using one of Clarity’s square embedders, I simply added a black mount to the topper and stuck it to the card.

Now, I did promise you a bit of an education with this one – well, there are indeed kingfishers with pink feathers, although they’re to be found in Asia not the UK! Meet the oriental dwarf kingfisher – isn’t he fabulous!

  1. I love that pygmy kingfisher, both on your card and in real life! Imagine! You used those mats to perfection with this project, Deborah! I’m in awe!

  2. It’s always so interesting to see how you make your cards up Deborah. You use such lovely products. I do like your bright kingfisher although at first I thought he was a kookaburra in which case the colours were certainly out of kilter with reality! Your version is much nicer. 🙂
