A Vespa for a Mod

I’m changing it up today from the florals of the last week, with an early look at the new ‘Just wings and wheels’ stamp set coming from ClarityCrafts tomorrow. As soon as I saw this scooter in the set I was reminded of the groups of Mods we used to see in the Sixties, heading off to the seaside on their Vespas (often for a fight with gangs of rockers!) The roundel was a common image they used, so I thought that would give me the perfect background, with a different take on the colours from Color Dare and the layout from Freshly Made Sketches.

I stared by using the nested circle embedders as stencils for the roundel. I put the 4th largest and the smallest onto a 5×5 card blank to create a ring, then brushed ‘chipped sapphire’ Distress Oxide onto it, using a sponge to sharpen up the edges. I then replaced the inner circle with the next size up embedder (which fits perfectly inside the larger one) and sponged ‘festive berries’ Distress Oxide into the centre.

Roundel completed, I stamped the Vespa onto a scrap of white card, shading it with Polychromos and a red Pergaliner and fussy cut it. I coloured the bit below the handlebars red as well – that was too difficult to cut out, so it will then disappear into the background red.

I framed the roundel using one of the circle embedders, added the Vespa to the card front and finished with the sentiment.

Does anyone else remember going to see Quadrophenia back in the last 1970s? Fantastic soundtrack by the Who and Sting’s first major acting role - I’m really showing my age now!

  1. Very cool retro design! Love the way you avoided fussy cutting under the handle bar by coloring the space red. Thanks for playing along with us at FMS this week.

  2. That was a great way to avoid fussy cutting and one I shall be remembering for future cards of my own. Love the simplicity (not) of this card. More work involved than the viewer would realize.

  3. Cute idea to use that Vespa, Deborah! I like how you placed it for the sketch and how you used the colors for our challenge. Thanks for playing along at Color My Heart Color Dare Challenge #584. – Melanie R. (I knew that Quadrophenia was related to “The Who” but not much else. I am obviously older than you… I lean a little more with the Elvis and early Beatles generations but have always enjoyed Sting, too.)

  4. What a cool card this is! At first, I thought you were putting a light behind it so the light on the Vespa would light up. lol Then I read what you were doing with the nested circles. I love it! Always love seeing your makes at Color Dare!
